Dressing Up: The Grown Up Bag

August 8, 2012 § 1 Comment

Personal style is not stagnant. It’s not a box that you stuff yourself in. It’s a living, breathing extension of yourself that changes and evolves as you do as a material expression of who you are and who you can be.

I am not a student anymore, I’m a professional. A newly minted professional. There are sartorial transitions that have to be made. New signals that I have to learn to send, new sartorial elements that have to be incorporated.

I have been doing a bit of hunting. In an effort to incorporate what is not simply just a more mature, professional look but my version of a more mature, professional look. Who is the older, professional Sara, and what does she want to wear? I’ve been ruminating on this question, and collecting little bits of inspiration that feel like they could be signals, pointing me in the direction I would like to go. Now I’m focusing on finding key pieces. Things that I will use the more, components of my wardrobe that I will wear or carry everyday. Lately, I’ve been specifically thinking in bags. I’m ready to turn in my worn tote bags of my student days and trading it in for something new.

Currently ranking high in the “consideration” phase of this process, vintage leather briefcases. I stumbled onto the Tanka Vintage one night while scouring the pages of Etsy and fell in love. No final decision has been made, but I’m pretty heavily leaning in this direction.

Dressing Up: Dreaming of Colder Weather

July 25, 2012 § Leave a comment

Autumn is still a few weeks off, but I’m already dreaming of what I plan to wear when the seasons finally change. I can’t help it. I love dressing for cold weather. I love chunky scarves, over-sized sweaters, knee high boots, and super opaque tights. Oh, how I love my tights!

Of course, it’s not just the clothing that I love about fall, though I will say that is probably about 70% of it. The other 30% is made up of the scents, flavors, colors, and making plans for the holiday season (I am a freak for all things Christmas, as you will soon see). I am happiest bundled up against the cold, cradling a cup of warm coffee in my hands. Savoring it for both the extremely necessary caffeine boost as well the pleasure I get from feeling the warmth that slides down my esophagus and into my stomach with every sip. Or in bed, wrapped up in my flannel sheets very early in the morning, listening to the wind and rain beating against my bedroom window while I doze for a few more minutes before leaving my nice warm bed.

I could go on for days. I won’t, but I could.

So I have been planning. More specifically, before I begin to budget for and/or covet specific items, I am collecting inspiration. I’m putting together a plan. I like to shop with a mission, so that is what I am putting together right now. A very thorough, detailed mission. So far the mission is looking very French inspired, with some rugged, outdoorsy elements. I like the mission. The mission excites me.

A couple of weeks ago I stumbled across Modern Hepburn and, I have to say, I think I’m in love. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to live inside a blog before, it’s so beautifully curated. I’m obsessed.
